The LUX To-Do List: January

Posted by Marielle T on

Welcome back to the first week of work in 2016! It turns out pulling yourself from under the covers and out of the post-Christmas sugar coma is harder than expected and frankly #thestruggleisreal. But onwards we go with open arms to embrace the exciting new year before us.

Thankfully for us Edmonton is taking winter seriously this year. January is jammed packed with amazing local wintery events that you won't want to miss before they're gone (or more specifically, melt). So be brave, bundle up and embrace living on the 53 parallel.

Edmonton's Answer to 'Frozen': Living up to our winter city claim to fame, Edmonton has successfully built a stunning Ice Castle in the heart of the River Valley. Be sure to check your tickets in advance as the castle is only open for 6 days a week and a couple of months. Find out more here

Skip the Freeway: Speaking of surrealist ice projects, Edmonton has also turned a once impossible sounding ice-way into a 400 metre reality, challenging the way we view travelling in YEG. Grab the hand of someone you love and skate under the rainbow lights through the Victoria Park Oval Iceway. Find out more here

More Ice: As if there wasn't enough ice-centric events going on this month Ice on Whyte is also running this month at the end of January celebrating Mardi Gras this year and 'Swing'N'Skate' every Sunday from 1-4pm at City Hall running to the end of February.

Inner Warmth: Indulge in food that warms the soul this month. Our top picks lately have been Lock Stock Coffee for biscuits on Saturday morning and Prairie Noodle Shop (our new neighbour specializing in ramen). Comfort food on a cold winters day? Yes please.

Family Fun: The 'Deep Freeze' festival is in it's ninth year this winter and hosts two days of winter fun for the whole family. Take part in free workshops, wagon rides and even a street hockey tournament. Did we mention there'd be maple syrup candy? Find out more here.
